‘Still seen as the classic games collection’
– English Chess Federation
‘It is a work of genius’
– The Compulsive Reader
One of the most important chess books ever written, reissued in celebration of a chess genius, Bobby Fischer.
The American takes the reader through 60 of his games, describing his thoughts, the intricacies behind his and his opponent’s strategies, the tactical justification of moves and the psychological battle in each one. You’ll find beautifully simple positional play by out-of-this-world combinations that are just breathtaking.
Fischer played nearly all of these games as a grandmaster so they are at the very highest level, but his lucid commentary makes every move and idea both accessible and understandable, meaning that every player will learn huge amounts from this book. It is an essential for each chess enthusiast, competitor and professional alike.
The controversial alterations that were made to Bobby Fischer’s words in the last edition have been omitted in this book, so only the author’s own words are expressed, giving a true insight into one of the most gifted, troubled and controversial minds of the 20th century.
‘Still seen as the classic games collection’
English Chess Federation
'It is a work of genius... There are masterpieces here aplenty, undoubtedly, they will give pleasure to all who love chess.'
The Compulsive Reader
'What is very attractive about the book – apart from the fact that Fischer was such an extraordinary player and analyst – is the honesty of his comments.'

Trend-forecasting collection of work from the trend think-tank at the world-famous Central Saint Martins college in London (often referred to as ‘Saints’). ‘Trends 09’ represents in a clear and concise visual manner early trend directions. Amongst the maelstrom of creativity, Saints edits, sources and narrates key early trends, mixing and matching creative disciplines (from fashion, design, fine art and product design), acknowledging that everything influences everything. Based on a 24-month forecast with considerable amount of design data, Saints thin-slices the most influential, directional and creative work to represent it in its rawest and earliest form with enough flexibility to adapt over the two-year lead. ‘Trends 09’ is composed of a general introduction to the think-tank’s findings, highlighting key drivers and influences in the year’s graduates work. It then presents the 10 key trends – some socio-cultural, some design led and some style based. All the work collated and represented in ‘Trends 09’ is from graduates and students. Central Saint Martins is unique in its expression of emerging trends and its privileged position at the heart of what is a world famous art and design college. The Saints think-tank consults blue chip companies such as Nokia, the Gucci Group and Dyson, providing an authoritative and proven track record in trend forecasting.
Often seen as dark and gloomy, oils can, in fact, be used to create colourful and light paintings that are wonderfully expressive. One significant characteristic of oil paint is its richness and depth of colour, something that is of particular interest to Nicholas Verrall. Immediately striking in all his pictures is the skilful way he handles colour to interpret the special qualities of light and mood found in a certain moment in time. In this book he discusses his working methods and the importance of colour, at the same time placing these issues within the general context of painting in oils, with all that this has to offer.
‘Colour and Light in Oils’ includes information, demonstrations and many inspirational finished paintings to help painters understand the value of colour in interpreting ideas with feeling and impact. It provides guidance on a wide range of skills, techniques and advice on subject matter and associated topics. Illustrated throughout, the book covers: the medium of oils; understanding oils; materials and equipment; painting techniques; and the studio

A rich resource for all designers and artists looking for inspiration and guidance on colour combinations. A huge range of combinations is provided, with full readings for both CMYK (for designers working in print) and RGB (for Web-based and other multi-media designers). As an accomplished colour theorist, the author looks at colour combinations through various elements of colour theory, from hues, values and chroma to working with concepts such as simultaneous contrast and perceptual transparency. The book also contains a selection of work from cutting-edge designers and artists who explain the use of colour in their work and offer exciting new palettes. The colour combinations are rendered as two- and three-colour graphics, stripe studies and more unstructured and complex compositions, all of which showcase the huge variety of effects that can be achieved with colour. This fascinating book reveals the true magic of colour and is an essential reference book for any designer and artist.

The author takes you through a variety of techniques for creating the image, such as scanning mixed-media artwork and digital photographs, or using imaging software to create exciting patterns and effects. No technical knowledge is required to use this book, as it offers easy-to-follow instructions, and the materials, technology and equipment are all readily available.

Throughout the book, inspirational ideas are offered to get your creativity going. From books to bangles, panels, bags and vessels, the book offers all textile artists ideas to expand their creative work.
Progressing through almost two centuries of corset-making, this fascinating collection showcases an astonishing range of period pieces, from the 1750 whale-boned corsets, through the invention of the sewing machine and mass-produced corsets of the 1850s to the makeshift corsets of World War I.
Reflecting the changing fashions and attitudes of women throughout the centuries, the collection includes corsets for pregnancy, riding corsets for sportswomen and hard-wearing corsets for housemaids. There are even corsets for small children and their dolls.
The book is packed with practical information on how to recreate these stunning period pieces for yourself. Each corset features an annotated pattern, a detailed drawing and close-up photography so historical detail can be captured accurately by the maker. A brief overview places the corset within its historical context and explains any features or alterations necessary for making up the patterns. For those new to dressmaking there are two step-by-step projects – one for a hand-stitched, pre-1850 corset and one for a post-1850 corset made using the sewing machine. There is also invaluable advice on a range of corset-making techniques, from cutting and fitting the patterns to adding historical detail. Information on lacing the corsets, inserting eyelets, gussets and split busks and on stitching and flossing is all included.
"Although aimed firmly at costume makers, there is still much to interest the historian, textile connoisseur, or indeed, closet corset-wearer." Embroidery magazine, Jan/Feb 2009
