Unfolding Cloth

Inspiration from Historical Textiles

Hannah Lamb

Batsford

Format:

Hardback ISBN: 9781849949439

Hardback publication date: 11 September 2025

Category: Textile Art

Hardback price:

£ 25.00

A guide to finding, researching and using historical textiles in your stitched work, to bring layers of meaning and a rich sense of emotional connection through place and time.

Renowned textile artist and tutor Hannah Lamb frequently uses and is inspired by old fabrics in her work, from age-worn cotton and linen sheets to delicate lace collars, vintage patchwork to snippets of colourful printed silk. In this book she explores many creative ways to incorporate historical textiles into your own work, from first conception and initial research to the finished piece. Chapters cover:

Unfolding: how to track down historical textiles in shops, markets, antiques fairs, museum collections and online, or in your own family scrap bag, and how to conduct thorough and meaningful research into them.

Connecting: how to design and plan your work with historical textiles, starting with mood boards and sketchbooks and progressing to practical creative experimentation, including old-fashioned techniques such as the ‘prick and pounce’ method of pattern transfer, popular in Tudor times.

Making: the practicalities of using old and fragile materials in your work, and how to combine them with newer fabrics to make cohesive and beautiful pieces that tell powerful stories. This chapter also explores alternative ideas, such as digital printing, that allow you to import the fabric’s essence but leave the original piece intact.

Gathering: this chapter considers examples of contemporary artworks that respond to textile heritage and place, and studies how we tell histories and whose perspective we tell them from.

This thoughtful, imaginative book is illustrated with inspirational examples of the author’s own work and that of other leading textile artists, and provides a valuable introduction to working with historical textiles to enhance your own pieces of textile art.

ABOUT THE Author

Hannah Lamb is a textile artist, lecturer and author, based at her home studio in West Yorkshire. She works with a range of textile processes, including stitch, print and fabric manipulation, creating textile artworks from an intimate scale to larger installation works. The story of UK skateboarding 1987–2002

Neil Macdonald

Batsford

Format:

Hardback ISBN: 9781849949422

Hardback publication date: 28 May 2026

Category: Sports

Hardback price:

£ 50.00

Elsewhere is the definitive oral history of British skateboarding. Told chronologically from the beginning of its identity shift to the start of the new millennium, the book explores the lasting influence British skateboarding continues to have on fashion, film, photography, art and media.

While British skateboarders moved the sport away from its Californian roots, embracing a different terrain with skaters in the north taking to ramps in abandoned warehouses and in the south skating the streets of new developments, the story of skateboarding in the UK goes far beyond the act of riding a board. As important were the cottage industries of clothes manufacture, photography, filmmaking and zine production which were inspired by British skateboarders: many of which are now multi-million-pound brands which regulate mainstream culture today.

Suitable not only for skaters but for anyone interested in film, fashion and photography, Elsewhere tells the story of skateboarding in the UK during the pivotal era of 1987–2002 when the British iteration of the sport developed its own unique identity and subsequently went on to inspire and transform global popular culture.

ABOUT THE Author

Neil Macdonald is the leading authority on British skateboarding. He has been skateboarding since 1988, and writing about skateboarding for Sidewalk, North, Free and Grey since 2007. He owns one of the world’s largest libraries of printed and audio-visual skateboard media, including complete sets of all UK publications and almost every British-made skateboard film, as well as many hundreds of pieces of hardware and clothing. His @scienceversuslife Instagram account celebrates the stylistic innovation of ’90s skateboarding.

From mermaids to dragons, 16 ancient Celtic fairy tales retold with their histories

The Celtic cultures of the British Isles – Ireland, Scotland and Wales – have produced some of the richest traditional tales in Europe. Three words best sum up their themes and flavour: adventure, enchantment and romance.

In this book, Rosalind Kerven has revived the best Celtic fairy tales for a new generation. The stories are sourced from old folk tale collections from all three regions, alongside selected medieval Welsh and Irish texts.

• Visit mysterious Otherworlds inside the hills and below the sea – including a land where only the truth is ever spoken.

• Meet iconic characters such as the first great Welsh poet, Taliesin, and the mighty Irish hero, Fionn mac Cumhaill.

• Cheer on bold Scots lasses such as Mallie Whuppy, as she outwits a fearsome giant, and Kate Crackernuts, who rescues a prince from bewitchment.

• Encounter witches, fairies, a bogle, talking animals and strange underwater beings.

Each story is retold from the medieval texts and oral storytelling traditions of Ireland, Scotland and Wales, with fascinating background notes and a long list of sources and further reading included. The background notes feature a list of source material, analyses of themes, and examples of similar legends from all over Europe.

Textile Protest

Artists, activism and the historical power of cloth in protest

Julia Triston

Batsford

Format:

Hardback ISBN: 9781849949071

Hardback publication date: 14 August 2025

Category: Textile Art

Hardback price:

£ 35.00

A landmark survey of how textiles have been used for political protest in the 20th and 21st centuries, including banners, flags, clothing and pieces from the world of fine art.

Textile Protest showcases the richness and diversity of textiles that have been used to express resistance in its many forms. Protest textiles can be confrontational and explicit, satirical and subversive or ironic and humorous, and can be used to bridge gaps following conflicts, or to challenge the contentious issues of language, ideology or imbalances of power. Whether for social justice or peace, to demonstrate opposition to oppression or to celebrate liberty, to honour hope and equality or to express solidarity with others, people have made and united behind protest textiles for hundreds of years. This book forms a valuable history of their use.

The book is thoughtfully illustrated with examples that include heavily embroidered suffragette and trade union banners, the knitted pussyhats of the 2017 Women’s March, protest textiles from the Guerrilla GirlsPride flags that celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, and the vast variety of textile art in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. It also covers the rich history of fine art textiles with a political theme, such as Judy Chicago’s iconic 1970s installation The Dinner Party, and includes interviews with prominent activist artists that give further insight into the way everyday materials can be repurposed to create arresting political art.

Bold and subversive, beautiful and fascinating, Textile Protest is an important global exploration of how fabric has been used to make a political statement over the years.

ABOUT THE Author

Julia Triston is a designer-maker and educator in stitched textiles, with over 30 years’ experience teaching in the creative industries. Julia’s work has appeared on television as well as being extensively documented in written media, and she regularly uses upcycled underwear for feminist art pieces, appearing on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square in 2012 in one of her ‘Bra-ra’ dresses.
