This new official history of St Catharine’s College has been published in celebration of its 550th anniversary on the Feast of St Catharine, 25 November 2023.

How did the College endure through periods of upheaval, financial insecurity and social change? How has the experience of studying, living and working at St Catharine’s changed over the centuries?

Beautifully illustrated, this account chronicles the College’s foundation in 1473 and subsequent development as a welcoming, thriving and vibrant academic community of approximately 1,000 students, Fellows and staff located in the heart of Cambridge, supported by a network of 10,000 alumni around the world.

The Skulpturensammlung und Museum für Byzantinische Kunst is housed in the Bode-Museum, part of the ensemble of prestigious museums on the Museuminsel Berlin. Skulpturensammlung is one of the largest collections of ancient sculpture in the world (early Middle Ages to the late eighteenth century), with works from the German-speaking countries, France, the Low Countries, Italy and Spain. The collection includes works by legendary sculptors such as Donatello, Tilman Riemenschneider, Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini and Andreas Schlüter.

The Museum für Byzantinische Kunst is a collection of Late Antique sarcophagi and sculpture from the Eastern Roman Empire, and ivory carvings from post-pharaonic, early Byzantine Egypt.

The works presented in this volume are amongst the most prized by the museum’s director, who combines expertise with a refreshingly personal perspective to invite the reader to experience them through new eyes.

Charles ‘Skipper’ Lynam, the celebrated preparatory school headmaster at the Dragon School, Oxford, during the First World War, inspired a generation of his pupils as they found themselves caught up in the conflict. This book tells the story of the school’s wartime years and the various fronts on which its boys were involved. It traces the roots of a school founded by Oxford dons for their children, its idiosyncratic ways and the extraordinary relationship Skipper Lynam forged with his boys, some of whom (in former pupil John Betjeman’s words) ‘lost their lives for King and Country and the Dragon School’.

Featuring sculptural, sound-based, and language-based artworks, this fascinating volume explores the experiential, psychological, and metaphorical implications of blindness and invisibility in recent American art. New research addresses the paradox of why and how numerous sighted and unsighted artists, normally considered to be ‘visual artists’ such as William Anastasi, Robert Morris, Joseph Grigely and Lorna Simpson, have challenged the primacy of vision as a bearer of perceptual authority. Their work explores what resides on the other side of the visual field, prompting audiences to reflect upon the significance of what we cannot see, whether by choice, habit or physiological limitations, in the world around us. In so doing, they point to ways of knowing beyond what can be observed with the eyes, as well as to the invisible forces (societal, political, cultural) that govern our own frameworks of experience.

The first half of the twentieth century marked the heyday of animal sculpture throughout Europe. This comprehensive survey showcases the work of forty artists at the forefront of the ‘Les Animaliers’ movement between 1900 and 1950. Drawing on the rich archive of the Sladmore Gallery, with over 350 colour photographs, individual biographies and two informative essays, this book contains a wealth of information for both established collectors and those new to the subject. It is a companion volume to Jane Horswell’s pioneering Bronze Sculpture of Les Animaliers, which covered the nineteenth century and was published over 50 years ago.

Rapid modernisation from the beginning of the twentieth century and the opening up of the natural world were both reflected in the art of the time. Today, as appreciation for our disappearing natural world increases, the period of sculpture featured in this publication resonates even more deeply.

Many cities around the world could claim to have a rich scientific history. However, between 1550 and 1800, London fostered its very own particular brand of scientific enquiry and practice. Science City explores how science shaped London, and London shaped science, as Britain’s new capital grew to become a powerful world city, a nexus of administration for ambitious scientific projects and a place to obtain exceptional scientific equipment. Sandra Vásquez de la Horra reimagines the world and deconstructs societal and cultural norms through her playful and surrealistic drawings and paper sculptures. Her work delves into shared and untold histories, trauma, desire, fantasies, and taboos. Born in Chile during the repressive Pinochet regime, she has lived and worked in Germany for decades, incorporating Latin American and European traditions into her unique artistic language. Her drawings – along with paintings, photographs, and films – explore mythologies, fantastical hybrid botanicals, diverse geographies, and text, with writing in Spanish, English, Italian, Latin, and German, that expands the possibilities of meaning for each image. She imbues the traditional technique of drawing with tactility by dipping finished drawings in beeswax, and she continues to challenge our preconceptions of what drawing can be by turning paper into three-dimensional sculptures. Sandra Vásquez de la Horra’s work invites us in and exposes the mysteries and intimacies of our shared experiences. 

This catalogue is the first comprehensive, scholarly publication on the Japanese print artist Saitō Kiyoshi to be published in English and accompanies the first major exhibition of his work in the United States since his death. Saitō was a central member of Japan’s creative print (sōsaku hanga) movement, and one of the best known and most popular modern Japanese artists in the United States. His work is appreciated for his refined sense of design and active use of woodgrain. The fully-illustrated book includes thematic essays, illustrations demonstrating Saitō’s technique, discussion of seals and signatures, chronology, and bibliography.

The Royal Łazienki in Warsaw was the summer residence of Stanisław August Poniatowski, the last king of Poland, during the 18th century.

Throughout his 30-year reign, Stanisław August, amassed a collection of paintings, sculptures, and prints, as well as coins and medals, made by both European and Polish artists. With time, the Royal Łazienki became the first modern museum in Poland open to the public.

Today, the Royal Łazienki is known as the most beautiful place in Warsaw. Each year, the gardens are visited by more than 2 million people. The royal residence is also one of the most prestigious places in the capital city. It hosts many cultural events including the Chopin concerts, Festival of Baroque Opera, Zone of Silence Festival, Festival of Lights, Winter Musical Salons and Poetry Salons.

The Royal Mews is a unique part of Britain’s heritage. Built in the gardens of Buckingham Palace between 1822 and 1825, it remains home to many of the carriages and cars used to transport the Royal Family to this day. The Mews is also responsible for the training of the famous Windsor Greys and Bays, the horses that pull the royal carriages, and for the care and upkeep of historic harness and liveries. Visitors to the Mews can view carriages including the 1902 State Landau, most recently seen during the wedding of HRH Prince William and Catherine Middleton, the magnificent Gold State Coach, recognised worldwide for its role in The Queen’s Coronation and Jubilee celebrations, and the royal fleet of specially adapted limousines, cared for as carefully as the horses.

With over 80 illustrations, this new souvenir provides a fascinating glimpse into the working life of the Royal Mews.
