Formby is a compact town. Its shopping centre is situated approximately 10 miles north of Liverpool. Probably in existence even prior to Norse settlement, growth and expansion began in 1848 when the railway from Liverpool to Southport was opened, making Formby more accessible. Until then, Formby had been just a small rural hamlet, and it remains a virtual island in the greenbelt, bounded by the sea to the west and farmland to the east. The sandy coastal strip has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation, and includes two National Nature Reserves.

This nostalgic collection of images highlights how fast the area is changing, and reveals the many sites of enormous historical significance that remain. Insightful captions explore the history of the area in a volume that will delight visitors and residents alike.

Since Reg Yorke’s retirement from his medical career, and Barbara Yorke’s from her work as a magistrate (for which she was delighted to receive an MBE), the authors have continued in their joint enjoyment of local history.

Their original research resulted in the remarkable discovery that Formby lifeboat station, established by 1776, was not only Britain’s first such station but also the world’s first. They have been writing about local history since the early 1980s but still enjoy discovering interesting new things about the area they have lived in for over half a century.

The transformation from fields to streets in Camden Town and Kentish Town began in the eighteenth century. This book covers many aspects of life in these adjacent neighbourhoods of Northwest London. The area was crossed by railway lines that provided much local employment. Camden Town was also a notable centre of the piano making industry. While public houses proliferated, some originally coaching inns, the residents’ spiritual needs were well served by churches and chapels. Theatres and cinemas provided entertainment and almost anything, including talking parrots, could be bought in the shops on or close to Camden High Street and Kentish Town Road. More recently, the area around Camden Lock on the Regent’s Canal has become one of London’s leading tourist attractions, famous for its vibrant atmosphere, restaurants and shops. Post Second World War redevelopment replaced large areas of Victorian housing: this book shows while much has changed amazingly, much has survived.

Dick Weindling was previously Head of Educational Management at the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) and then a freelance educational researcher. Format:

Hardback publication date: 1 September 2011

Series: Then and Now

Category: Regional History

Hardback price:

RRP: £ 12.99 SALE PRICE: £14.9925

Southend-on-Sea has gone through many transformations since its birth in the Middle Ages, when a settlement of farmers and fishermen was established at the southernmost end of the lands of Prittlewell Priory. Having acquired the name ‘South End’, the area changed when the Lord of the Manor in the eighteenth century had a ‘New Town’ built along the cliffs to the west. The arrival of the railway in the mid-nineteenth century, and the subsequent influx of seaside day trippers, boosted Southend’s popularity, and it quickly expanded into a large and bustling town.

In this fascinating photographic history, Ken Crowe takes a fond look at his home town, exploring the changes to its streets through carefully chosen snapshots of Southend-on-Sea as it was in the past and is today.
