"The D-Day landings in Normandy on 6th June 1944 have been described as the greatest amphibious operation in the history of warfare.

The scale was majestic; 5,000 ships, together with thousands of lesser craft and backed by 11,000 aircraft. If the scale of the military undertaking was heroic, so too was its objective – nothing less than the defeat of Nazi Germany and the liberation of Europe. In this dramatic account of events, military experts from Britain, the United States and Germany describe the planning, build-up and execution of the D-Day attack."

Each chapter is themed, with the aim that the reader will have learnt a specific technique at the end and will move towards a better understanding of the thought processes of the expert – or talented – player.

Conversational in style, the book focuses on the dual roles of logic and intuition in the game of bridge and in so doing it offers sound instruction as well as much food for thought.

Stepney Then & Now

Samantha Bird

Pitkin

Format:

Paperback publication date: 1 June 2013

Series: Then and Now

Category: Regional History

Paperback price:

RRP: £14.99 SALE PRICE: £14.9925

Stepney is an area with many well-known associations and images from the poverty-stricken slums of the late nineteenth century to the iconic borough it became for architecture during the Festival of Britain. Stepney also had to soak up heavy bomb damage during the Blitz and sent her children away to safety in the Second World War. For those left behind they faced their own war. Among Stepney’s rich history there was the classical confrontation between Mosley’s fascists and the socialist left at the ‘Battle of Cable Street’, and the earlier dramatic ‘Siege of Sidney Street’ when Liberal Home Secretary Winston Churchill rooted out an anarchist cell. There was the rise and fall of the great local docks, the immigration of large numbers of Jewish refugees from Eastern Europe and elsewhere. The growth of the Labour Party and the surprising ascendancy of the Communist Party were also witnessed and much more besides. Here is Stepney as it was then compared to how we see it today
