RRP: £ 6.00 SALE PRICE: £14.9925

Discover the fascinating life of a master of 19th century art and design

William Morris was a man of extraordinary diversity and application, turning his attention to the mastery of as many skills in one lifetime as most men would achieve in several. He became an artist in oils, stained glass and ceramic tiles, a weaver, decorator, textile designer, calligrapher, type designer, typesetter, bookbinder, printer, novelist, poet and lecturer. One of his most influential concepts embraced the ‘small is beautiful’ ideal: suppose people lived in little communities … and had few wants; almost no furniture for instance, and no servants, and studied … what they really wanted. Then, Morris felt, life might begin to take on its proper form. He was unquestionably one of the first conservationists. Certainly, a century later, his ideas and his designs are still valued and enjoyed by people everywhere.

ABOUT THE Author

Jane Drake is the author of Pitkin classic The World of William Morris, an illustrated introduction to the 19th century artist.

The World of Alice

Mavis Batey

Pitkin

Format:

Paperback publication date: 20 February 2014

Category: Biography

Paperback price:

RRP: £ 6.00 SALE PRICE: £14.9925

Alice, and her adventures in Wonderland, have become British literary canon. But how did she come to be?

Wonderland was invented by Lewis Carroll, whose real name was Charles Dodgson. He was a reserved bachelor Oxford don who had a unique gift for telling stories to children.

Dodgson loved children and had a deep understanding of their minds and appreciation of their points of view. A great number of his stories have been lost, but Alice Liddell, the daughter of the Dean of Christ Church, insisted that those he told to her and her sisters should be written down.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland became immortalised, and were followed by the sequel Through the Looking-Glass. The stories have since become known and loved by children and adults all over the world. The tale of how they came to be written is, in many ways, just as fascinating as the Alice stories themselves.

ABOUT THE Author

Mavis Batey, MBE, was an English code-breaker during World War II. Her work at Bletchley Park was one of the keys to the success of D-Day, later becoming a campaigning garden historian and author.

She had a keen interest in the novels of Lewis Caroll, producing several books on the subject, as well as many books about her work at Bletchley.

She died in 2013.
