Northampton Then & Now

Philip Sawford

Pitkin

Format:

Standing on the banks of the River Nene, the thriving town of Northampton has come a long way from its industrial past in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries when its wealth was built on the dominant boot and shoe industry. Since then small independent family-run retailers have given way to large national chain stores and shopping centres such as the Grosvenor, and modern shops, cafés and bars fill the lively town centre.

Yet despite these changes, Northampton still retains many of its original buildings and monuments, including the Guildhall, the Sessions House, Becket’s Well and Bradlaugh’s Monument.

In Northampton Then & Now, Philip Sawford compares archive images of the Northampton of the past with full-colour modern photographs of the town today, exploring just how much has changed as well as finding unexpected similarities.

Life on the Fishing Fleet

Anthony Burton

Pitkin

Format:

The British fishing fleet industry was one of huge importance: it was estimated that in late 19th century there were 22,000 merchant ships in the country but 30,000 fishing boats, and the industry employed over 100,000 workers.

But when did this great industry begin? For thousands of years people have been catching and eating fish. Moving closer to our own time, industry started to diversify after the Viking era to different regions with boats suited to particular needs.

Fishing has always been an occupation fraught with danger though, and this colourful guide traces its risky history from line fishing through to trawlers and the steam age. Exploring not just the history of fishing but also the lives on board of fishermen and the disasters that could befall them, Anthony Burton’s guide gives an informative introduction to life on fishing fleets. The story of the fishermen is one of dangers and hardships endured, and one of tight-knit communities.

Includes a list of interesting places to visit for keen readers.

Leicester Then & Now

Ben Beazley

Pitkin

Format:

Over the past century of so, the face of Leicester has changed dramatically. It did not sustain a large amount of bomb damage in comparison to other British cities during the Second World War, though one particular night-time raid on 19/20 November 1940, resulted in large areas of the centre and suburbs suffering at the hands of the enemy. Enough damage was caused to prompt the city planners to redevelop the centre for future generations. New roads were constructed, including the concentric ring roads that now circle the city, and slum areas were cleared to be replaced by inner city housing estates such as those at St Matthew’s and St Peter’s. All in all Leicester has developed at a frantic rate, and here Ben Beazley documents the changes that have taken place. Over 200 photographs with informative captions tell the story of Leicester’s transformation and this book is sure to be an eye-opener for locals with memories of what has been lost, and gained, over the years.

Harrogate Then & Now

David J. Jenkinson

Pitkin

Format:

This enthralling collection of eighty pairs of ‘Then and Now’ photographs compares the Harrogate of yesteryear with the Harrogate of today. Retracing the steps of his predeccessors David J. Jenkinson ahs gone to great lengths to capture precisely the same views as those earlier photographers.
Through the pairing of images we see the changes that have taken place in Harrogate and occasionally scenes that remain little altered today. The transformations common to most towns and cities are seen in Harrogate the shift from pedestrian and equestrian traffic to the constant stream of motor cars. Particular to Harrogate, however, is the transition from spa town to centre for conference.
The development of Britain’s most famous spa town is seen in Kings Road, Station Parade and Parliament Street. Our attention is caught by the designs of Victorian architects and engineers through to the modern shopping centres of today. We are taken on a journey around the town through time as well as locality. Landmarks, made famous by a century of picture postcards, and long lost buildings, such as St George’s orphanage, are pictured with the corresponding, perhaps unrecognisable view in our own time. The changes experienced on the railway are well illustrated as are the changes seen in the main roads, residential streets and buildings throughout Harrogate.

This book provides an evocative insight into the history of modern Ely and its people, and affords the reader a valuable opportunity for comparisons both then and now. Extending the information given in a number of books of old photographs of Ely, this collection of images, in conjunction with the previous publication Ely in the Images of England series, provides a fascinating overall picture of a long period of development, this time carrying us into the second half of the twentieth century.
