Carl Rungius

A stunning volume chronicling the life and art of Carl Rungius, North America’s premier wildlife painter, featuring paintings of majestic elk, moose, and bear.

Throughout his career, renowned wildlife painter Carl Rungius (1869–1959) travelled to Wyoming, the Yukon, New Brunswick, and Alberta in search of wildlife in wild places. As he spent time painting magnificent animals, breathtaking landscapes and western scenes, his style developed from academic naturalism to rugged impressionism.

This spectacular volume provides fresh perspectives into Rungius’s storied career, illustrating his artistic journey with well-known and rarely-seen works. Fascinating new scholarship offers insight into a life that ranged from the art galleries of Manhattan to the Rocky Mountains of the American West.

The book accompanies a touring exhibition opening at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, Wyoming, and serves as an accessible companion to the comprehensive online Carl Rungius Catalogue Raisonné.
