Whether through tapestry or print, preserving our ancient stories is vital to understanding our history.

Taken from ‘Unearthed’ by @nick.bateman9296 this poem was discovered in the fluttering charred remains from a collection of manuscripts in Ashburnham House, London. Following a disastrous fire, the burnt remains were being played with by a collection of schoolboys, when the verses of this ancient poem were found.

It depicts another famous English last stand, just 70 years before the battle of Hastings featured in #TheBayeuxTapestry. We now know the epic to be called the ‘Battle of Maldon’. As it is now the poem is missing its beginning and end. The surviving 325 lines commemorate the heroic but ultimately doomed defense put up by an English militia, led by Byrhtnoth, against a marauding Viking force which has landed on a small island in the Blackwater Estuary in Essex.

What a party last night! Thanks to everyone who came to celebrate @catherinemarielongtin’s book 'Log Cabin Quilt Blocks' and the opening of the accompanying exhibition at the @batsfordgallery.

The exhibition showcases all 100 blocks featured in the book together for the first time and is showing at the Batsford Gallery until 27 September. Open Thursday–Sunday 11am–6pm. There are also a few tickets left for Catherine's talk on Wednesday 23 September. Book via the @selvedgemagazine website.
